Academic Support Coordinator

West Virginia University (WVU) Upward Bound (UB) is hiring an academic support coordinator to implement a daily tutoring program and assist high school students with capstone projects during the Six-Week Summer Residential Program (June 25-August 4). While the summer program is six weeks in length, candidates for this position should be available from early-June through early-August to accommodate staff trainings and prep work related to the position (8-10 weeks).

Duties associated with the daily tutoring program include: tutoring high school students in multiple subjects, managing Upward Bound peer tutors, collecting and analyzing data to identify students’ strength and problem areas, submitting paperwork in a timely manner and according to federal regulations, and assisting students with ACT/SAT prep.

Duties associated with students’ capstone projects include: attending class with students during their designated summer capstone course, communicating with summer instructors about capstone requirements, and assisting students with the research process (developing ideas, finding reliable sources, developing arguments, understanding the scientific method, presenting arguments/results, etc.) and with presenting information verbally and in writing (writing/editing a research paper, following a rubric, public speaking, visual aids, etc.).

Other duties may include supervising students during various activities and during meals, attending staff meetings, and other tasks as assigned. Duties are subject to change based on UB students’ needs and applicants’ strengths/interests.

Depending on available funding, this position will either be paid directly through Upward Bound or through an AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate service opportunity with West Virginia’s Promise-The Alliance for Youth. If paid through Upward Bound, the position will be paid a stipend. Amount will be determined based on number of hours worked and candidate qualifications. If paid through AmeriCorps, the position will be paid a living allowance and a choice of a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (can be used to pay college loans or future educational expenses) or a cash stipend.
